RE: “Togo attempts laying claim to Volta Lake”
The Peoples Liberation Council (PLC) of Western Togoland noted with concern an article published by the Ghanaian Times Newspaper on Wednesday, July 25, with the above caption.
The opening paragraph of the article attributed to the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) Dr. Clifford Braimah who was addressing the Public Accounts Committee of Ghana’s Parliament said the Republic of Togo attempted to lay claim to the Volta lake and that Togo’s action stemmed from Ghana’s uncompromising position in talks over the Sogakope-Lome Trans Boundary Water Supply Project.
The PLC thinks that the so called uncompromising position being taken by Ghana in this matter and the claims by the Togolese authorities leaves much to be desired.
In the first place, it should be made clear that the Volta Lake is part of the larger Volta River which source is from the Republic of Burkina Faso and runs through the Volta region which is a bonafide Western Togoland Territory.
The fact that the Republic of Togo attempted laying claim to the Volta Lake, should ring a bell in the ears of the government of the Republic of Ghana that the people of the Republic of Togo (Eastern Togoland) are aware that the Volta River and for that matter the Volta Lake actually belonged to their brothers in the Volta region, the Oti region and parts of the Northern region which are all Western Togoland Territories and for that matter Ghana cannot claim ownership of the natural resource, much less dictate matters relating to the Volta Lake.

This development should inform the government of Ghana that the people of Western Togoland are very much aware and wide awake of all the natural resources that abound in their land and any attempt by the government of Ghana to explore or mine any of these natural resources as is being planned in the Oti region which is part of Western Togoland Territory, will be resisted by the people with all their might.
A word to the wise, they say is enough!
