MY REFLECTION ON THE CREATION OF NEW REGIONS IN GHANA.
My personal reflection on the panel discussion above takes me through some of the points issues raised. The Chairman of the Peoples Liberation Council of Western Togoland said that according to his opinion the speed at which the process rushed appears there is a political motive behind. I would doubt if this suspicion can be genuinely refuted because the government could not yield to civil society oppositions and law suits even to the very voting day. He cited the government protected crimes of electoral mulpractices widely covered live on social media and limitation of voting to only those who petitioned the government as indicative of political motivation or otherwise.
Asked why the opposition was greatest in the Volta Region Mr. Adeli said that part of the country of the country is not a full territory of Ghana and the people needed a broader consultation than made by the government. This disregard for the people of Volta Region has left serious implications on everything the government does about it. The creation of the Oti Region in particular is a violation of the multicultural diversity harmoniously enjoyed by the people of Volta Region for time immemorial. The ill effects are already manifesting in the level of hatred induced by the vicious campaigns made as if some people were against the development of the area.
The Chairman argued that the neglect of road network development in the Volta Region was the major limiting factor to development because there was no way development dacilities could be made available in those remote areas without roads. Truly, both public and private development can only progress there depending on opening up the area with good roads.
